Traditionally, a driven pheasant hunt was reserved for Europe’s royalty and aristocracy. The Driven style of pheasant hunting has a long and rich history, dating back many centuries. Now you can take part in this tradition. Deep Canyon Preserve carries on the Legacy in Central Oregon. During our Continental Hunt we add our own twist on the traditional driven pheasant hunt, so that you get all the fun and feel like royalty. Join us for one of scheduled hunts or create a royal experience for yourself and you hunting partners.
The traditional Driven hunts began with the Horns men. The hunting horns would blow notifying the hunters to prepare and the “beaters”, traditionally servants, would walk through the woods driving the pheasants ahead of them, pushing the upland birds towards the hunters. When the pheasants reached the clearing at the edge of the forest and hill they would flush high and fly very, very fast towards the waiting guns. These high flying pheasants provide “missile” like targets. Midway through the hunt, servants brought their masters food and drink and a feast at the castle followed the hunt.
Deep Canyon's Continental Hunts, in the tradition of the driven hunts reserved for the kings so long ago, begin with the hunting horns. Deep Canyon’s rich, mountain swept background provides a truly exciting pheasant, and chukar hunting experience for both the novice and the experienced hunter. Once the hunters’ horns sound across the landscape, prepare for the most exhilarating pheasant and chukar hunt of your life. Birds fly fast and frequently from atop our Continental Hill. Hunters stand at the base of the Continental Rimrock at hunting stations. Each station is spaced from the rock wall, giving each hunter a sporting chance at birds as they fly over head. High birds are your target. If a bird flies beyond the line past a hunter's mark, they are left for the "Scratch" hunts after the Continental. 8 Stations surround the Continental Hill, and everyone gets a turn at each station.
True to tradition, we provide food and drink after the hunt, a welcome respite from the hunting. After a short refreshment break, hunters gather to draw straws for hunting fields and the "scratch" hunts begin. These hunts happen immediately after the refreshment break. You may choose to hunt with your own dog(s) or hunt along side one of professional guides and their dog(s). The "scratch" hunts last for 1-2 hours.
The hunters’ meal, a Kobe feast at the lodge, rounds out the day. Join the rest of the field of hunters for a hearty meal prepared by our chef. Share the stories of the day's hunt and the glory of receiving the Royal Treatment.
